Did you know, for instance, that Princess Winnifred actually swam the moat to reach Prince Dauntless the Drab? Or that Lady Larken’s love for Sir Harry provided a rather compelling reason that she reach the bridal altar post haste? Or that, in fact, it wasn’t the pea at all that caused the princess a sleepless night? Carried on a wave of wonderful songs, by turns hilarious and raucous, romantic and melodic, this rollicking spin on the familiar classic of royal courtship and comeuppance provides for some side-splitting shenanigans. Chances are you’ll never look at fairy tales quite the same way again.

Come on out and find out for yourself when Odyssey Theatre Company presents “Once Upon A Mattress” May 21-23, and May 27-29, 2010 at Gilroy High School.

Based on Agatha Christie’s most acclaimed work, the play follows ten unfortunate souls, guests for the weekend on Soldier Island.  Statuettes of little soldier boys on the mantel fall to the floor and break one by one as those in the house succumb to a diabolical avenger. A nursery rhyme tells how each of the ten “soldiers” met his death until there were none. One down and nine to go!

Featuring actors from Gilroy and Christopher high schools, the show will be performed in the Gilroy High School Theatre.

Adapted for the stage by Catherine Booth and Greg Camacho-Light, the tales are a romp through the macabre with creative and humorous staging. Performed in the style of story theatre, the tales include “The Boy Who Went Forth to Find What Fear Was,” “The Robber Bridegroom,” and “Fitcher’s Feathered Fowl.”

Please mark your calendar and support educational theatre while enjoying a fun show! Performed by students from Brownell Middle School, the show which inaugurates the new black box theatre at Christopher High School is part of Odyssey’s Theatre in the Schools program.
